The Cricketers Arms, Rickling Green (about 15 minutes from the farm) An AA Rosette awarded country pub overlooking a picture perfect village cricket green. The seasonal menus are crafted by chef and owner Harry Kodagoda using locally sourced ingredients, and the oak beamed bar and stylish restaurant feel just the right side of special without being stuffy. In summer you can dine al fresco watching the cricket. It\u2019s part of the Chestnut group and consistently well reviewed. The kind of place you book for a long Sunday lunch and don't leave until teatime.
The Eight Bells, Saffron Walden (5 miles, in the heart of town) A 16th century timber framed pub on Bridge Street with a beautifully modern interior and a seasonal British menu that changes with the chef\u2019s choice of fresh ingredients. Locally sourced produce, a carefully curated wine list and a gin collection worth exploring. The converted barn dining space is a lovely surprise. Perfect for an evening out after a day wandering Saffron Walden's independent shops.
The Restaurant on Church Street, Saffron Walden (5 miles) This is the one for a special evening. An intimate, candlelit restaurant tucked away on Church Street serving modern European cuisine with a contemporary North African influence. Chef and proprietor Hassan Shamkh uses locally sourced produce to create dishes that are beautifully presented and genuinely memorable. The fillet steak, scallops and mango passion fruit are frequently singled out. Book ahead as it's small and deservedly popular. Open Tuesday to Saturday evenings only.
The Tickell Arms, Whittlesford (about 25 minutes, just south of Cambridge) A Grade II listed former coaching inn with seasonal modern British menus, wood burning stoves, a conservatory overlooking a Victorian walled rose garden and pond, and an extensive wine list. Part of the well regarded Cambscuisine group. The Tickell is the sort of place that feels like a destination in its own right. Ideal if you're combining a trip into Cambridge with a proper dinner.
